Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic success program utilizing peer-assisted study sessions to assist students with traditionally difficult academic courses. SI sessions are an opportunity for students to work together with other classmates to ask questions, prepare for examinations, compare notes, discuss readings, and develop organizational tools.

Primary SI Facilitator responsibilities include:

• Attending lectures with students to:
  • Relearn course content,
  • Take notes,
  • Promote SI,
  • Role model good student behavior, and
  • Prepare for SI sessions.
• Planning for SI sessions, including:
  • Creating an agenda, and
  • Preparing worksheets or other resources.
• Facilitating at least 2 SI sessions every week using:
  • Planned group work.
  • Collaborative activities, and
  • Active learning strategies.
• Participating in Staff Development Activities, including:
  • SI Facilitator training at the beginning of the semester,
  • Six large team staff meetings,
  • Individual meetings with an SI Supervisor or Mentor,
  • Observing a peer SI Facilitator, and
  • Additional workshops you choose to best fit your skill development needs.
• Additional administrative responsibilities.

All SI Facilitator responsibilities typically take about 8-10 hours per week, which leaves time for other employment or leadership experiences; however, we need SI Facilitators to ensure those 8-10 hours per week are dedicated to SI responsibilities.

The SI Facilitator position is a paid, professional opportunity ideally for student leaders who want to:

• Help peer students develop study skills
• Build rapport with an instructor or academic department
• Develop skills as a facilitator of learning
• Improve their public speaking and interpersonal communications skills
• Increase their knowledge about leadership, organization, and time management
• Gain experience in writing lesson plans (session planning)
• Improve their problem-solving and critical thinking skills
• Prepare to become a teacher, prepare for graduate school, or prepare for examinations (ex: GRE, MCAT, etc)
• Advance within an organization (promotion opportunities available)

Undergraduate students with a proven competency in the targeted content area

Minimum Qualifications:

• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater
• Completed targeted courses at 168¿ª½±Íø¹ÙÍø with a B or better
• Possess good interpersonal communication skills

Steps to apply for the SI facilitator position:

Complete the through Careers. (Search for Supplemental Instruction (SI) Peer Facilitator position on your desired campus.)

Once your application is received and reviewed, SI Administration will contact you to schedule an interview. 

Note: You will be required to provide two academic or professional references from 168¿ª½±Íø¹ÙÍø faculty or staff (you'll receive instructions for this during the interview process). We encourage you to speak with your intended references to make sure that they are willing to provide a positive reference for you. One reference form should be completed by a faculty member from within the department in which you would like to become an SI facilitator. For example, if you would like to be an SI facilitator for BIOL 1107K, then one of your reference forms should be completed by a faculty member from the biology department. Your other reference form may be completed by any faculty or staff member at 168¿ª½±Íø¹ÙÍø.
